How to choose a backsplash? Ideas and practical tips!

A natural stone kitchen countertop will always need backsplash and this is installed considering the practical and aesthetical needs. Serving as protection for the wall, the backsplash is to be chosen from the same material as the countertop, or at least from the same family. A granite countertop requires a granite backsplash, but you can also have it from another natural stone. Usually, countertops are made of polished stone and you should have backsplashes with same finish for easier maintenance.

Essentially, there are two types of recommendations for backsplashes:
1. Countertops made from the same material as the countertop and perhaps flooring, not necessarily with the same finish. This matching creates harmony and balance. Fantastico Gold Granite Polished Countertop fits perfect with a backsplash made with tiles from the same material. The same tiles can be installed on flooring. A Nero Marquina Marble Countertop makes a perfect fit with a backsplash and flooring cladded with tiles from the same material. These countertops were made from a material with the same finish as the tiles for the flooring and backsplash. Classic Cross Cut Polished Travertine used for the countertop, can be perfectly matched by a flooring from the same material, honed or brushed and backsplash, also with polished finish.
2. Countertops made of mosaics, from the same material as the countertop. Thus, Silver Travertine Countertop (even with honed finish) is balanced fine by a backsplash, also from Silver Travertine Mosaic. Cappuccino Marble Mosaic with tumbled finish, delivers not only a backsplash from the same material as the polished countertop but also an exquisite beauty cladding.
The countertop, as a furniture piece in the kitchen, needs to withstand the attack of abrasive and corrosive agents, which could scratch, burn or stain it. In turn, the backsplash, although is not as intensely used as the countertop, needs to be able to withstand the splashes resulted from working on the countertop. Both surfaces need treatment after installation, maintenance and aftercare.
