Recognized as one of the oldest and most famous fountains in the world, the Trevi Fountain "works" directly for the people, by contributing to the church’s charity organization, namely Caritas, aimed at helping the low-income people of Rome.

Built mostly of travertine like the Colosseum, but also with Carrara Marble, throughout 30 years, under the rule of 3 popes, the fountain was inaugurated in 1762 as a Baroque wonder at the time.
The central figures are Oceanus, deemed by Romans as the personification of water, then Abundance and Health, with the relief above depicting a Virgin Lady indicating to soldiers the source of water.

The legend says that the superstition originated in ancient Rome when the residents threw coins into the water so that the Gods would bless their journey. As for the position, at the crossroad of three streets, hence the name (Trevi = "tre viae", where "via" is Roman for the word “road”). The legend also mentions that whoever throws a coin over the shoulder will return to Rome one day.

And the "payment" for the “good fortune” service is explained by a natural symbiosis between stone and water, two essential elements and facets of the story.
