Best tips for creating a traditional Greek garden

Terrace & Garden // 28.11.2018

In ancient history, the Greek garden was intended to protect against wind and sun and also for maintaining a damp air during summer with all the flower pots and plants. In smaller Greek villages, garden was not part of a tradition, therefore people decorated the areas in front of the house with flowers pots and flower boxes. The first evidence of Greek gardens are strongly connected with planting olive trees.

Here are some principles that you need to follow for a Greek atmosphere in your garden:

Neutral, warm, colors for the background

The light colors were used to reflect the sunlight and became a tradition: you can use the light color natural stone for paving the garden walkways and the terrace flooring.

Olive trees

According to the Greek mythology, when Goddess Athena plunged her sword into the ground, this turned into an olive tree. And the tree is one of the features of a Greek-inspired garden.

In Romania, the olive trees are not helped by the climate to develop faster, since in here is warmer compared to Greece. However, with the proper care, an olive tree is able to withstand the bad weather. Grown in pots (and therefore kept indoor during winter) the olive tree will develops slower, however it will form a beautiful crown.

Touches of vivid colors

On a quiet background, with creamy, white and yellow shades and having around green shrubs and aromatic herbs (recommended in this climate, such as parsley, basil, maybe and oregano or even sage in pots), a few brightly colored flowers will convey a popular contrast.

Clay pots

Clay pots are still a feature of the Greek exterior, but for an extended durability you can replace them with flower pots and flower boxes from composite stone, decorated with Mediterranean elements.

Symmetry

Similar to the Italian-inspired garden, in here also the symmetry will create a perfect effect. Depending on your available space, you can have layers of flowers and vegetables with symmetric layout and separated by cobblestone or colored pebbles.

Gazebo

A more secluded area in your garden, separated with wooden pillars or even Greek-inspired columns, next to which you can grow climbing plants – shadow and freshness are responsible for for shaping the desired atmosphere.

For a Greek-inspired garden you can also include an outdoor kitchen: the oven or barbecue grill can be cladded with travertine and sealed against weather conditions, or purchased and assembled (durable brick, cladded with polygonal stone or splitface stone).

Likewise, there is a wide range of decoration elements for shaping a Greek-inspired garden: columns, massive pots, statues or even garden water fountains with rustic look and produced from composite stone.
